Lab-Grown Diamond Clarity Grades: Which Levels Sell Best at European Retail

Info Labgems·24 giugno 2026
Lab-Grown Diamond Clarity Grades: Which Levels Sell Best at European Retail

Clarity is the most misunderstood purchasing decision for retailers new to lab-grown diamonds. Colour grade drives the biggest price swing, but clarity is where retailers most often over-buy—paying for grades the customer will never perceive—or under-buy, stocking stones with visible inclusions that generate objections. This guide covers exactly which clarity grades sell best at European retail, broken down by shape and price point, so you can buy with precision through the certified diamond search.

How Clarity Is Graded

Clarity measures the presence, size, and position of internal inclusions and surface blemishes in a diamond. IGI grades clarity on an eleven-point scale from FL (Flawless) at the top through to I2 at the bottom.

FL – Flawless. No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification.

IF – Internally Flawless. No internal inclusions; minor surface blemishes only.

VVS1 and VVS2 – Very, Very Slightly Included. Inclusions are extremely difficult to see under 10x.

VS1 and VS2 – Very Slightly Included. Inclusions visible under 10x but not to the naked eye.

SI1 and SI2 – Slightly Included. Inclusions noticeable under 10x; may be visible to the naked eye in SI2.

I1 to I2 – Included. Inclusions visible to the naked eye.

Lab-grown diamonds frequently achieve higher clarity grades than mined equivalents because the controlled growth process produces fewer random inclusions. This means a retailer can access strong commercial clarity grades at accessible wholesale prices. The inclusion types differ by growth method—a point covered in the guide to how lab-grown diamonds maintain uniform quality.

The Key Concept: Eye-Clean

The single most important term in clarity buying for retail is "eye-clean." An eye-clean diamond has no inclusions visible to the naked eye at normal viewing distance. A customer cannot see the difference between a VVS2 and an eye-clean SI1 without a loupe—but the wholesale price difference between them is significant.

This is the core insight that drives profitable clarity buying. For most retail purposes, the goal is to buy the lowest clarity grade that is still reliably eye-clean for that specific shape. Paying for VVS or higher on a stone the customer perceives as identical to an eye-clean SI1 is margin left on the table. The relationship between perceived quality and conversion is covered in the cut quality and retail conversion guide.

The Commercial Sweet Spot: VS1 to SI1

For the majority of European retail, the clarity range that sells best sits between VS1 and SI1. This band offers eye-clean appearance across most shapes while keeping wholesale cost at a level that supports healthy retail margin.

VS1: A safe, premium-feeling clarity grade that is eye-clean across all shapes including step cuts. The strongest choice for higher-value stones where the customer expects documented quality.

VS2: The single most commercially efficient clarity grade for retail. Eye-clean across nearly all shapes, with a wholesale price meaningfully below VS1. This is the default recommendation for the majority of certified stock.

SI1: Eye-clean in brilliant cuts where the faceting pattern masks inclusions. The best value grade for round and brilliant fancy shapes, allowing the strongest margin position. Requires individual review in step cuts.

Buying within this band, matched correctly to shape, is where retailers maximise both saleability and margin. The full pricing mechanics are in the retail pricing strategy guide.

Clarity by Shape: The Critical Variable

The shape of a diamond changes how visible its inclusions are. This is the most important factor in clarity buying, and the one most often overlooked by new retailers.

Brilliant cuts hide inclusions. Round brilliants, and brilliant-faceted fancy shapes such as oval, cushion, and radiant, use a faceting pattern that scatters light and masks small inclusions. For these shapes, SI1 is reliably eye-clean and represents the strongest value position. There is rarely a commercial reason to buy above VS2 for a brilliant cut intended for standard retail.

Step cuts reveal inclusions. Emerald cuts and asscher cuts use long, open, parallel facets that act like windows into the stone. Any inclusion is far more visible than it would be in a brilliant cut of the same grade. For step cuts, VS2 is the practical minimum for retail, and VS1 is the safer choice. Buying SI1 in an emerald cut frequently results in a visible inclusion and a stone that will not sell.

Princess and mixed cuts sit in between. Princess cuts hide inclusions well in the centre but can show them near the corners. VS2 is the reliable choice. Inclusions near the corners also carry a durability consideration, as corners are the most vulnerable point of the stone.

The complete shape demand framework is covered in the guide to the most popular diamond shapes for 2026.

Clarity by Price Point

Matching clarity grade to the retail price tier protects margin and meets customer expectation at each level.

Entry tier (accessible bridal and fashion): SI1 in brilliant cuts. Eye-clean, strong margin, meets customer expectation at this price point. The clarity grade most customers neither ask about nor perceive.

Core bridal tier: VS2 across most shapes. The reliable middle ground that customers feel confident about when they review the IGI certificate, without the premium cost of VS1 and above.

Premium and luxury tier: VS1 and selectively VVS2. At higher price points the customer is more likely to scrutinise the grading report, and the documented clarity grade becomes part of the perceived value. The cost of the higher grade is justified by the price tier and the customer's expectation.

This tiering allows a retailer to stock the right clarity for each segment of their range rather than applying one clarity standard across all price points. The 2026 margin strategy guide covers how clarity tiering fits the wider margin structure.

What to Avoid

Do not buy SI2 or below for display stock. SI2 inclusions are frequently visible to the naked eye and generate customer objections at point of sale, regardless of how strong the colour and cut grades are.

Do not buy SI1 in step cuts without review. The open faceting will frequently reveal an inclusion that would be hidden in a brilliant cut. Always review step-cut stones individually before ordering.

Do not over-buy clarity on melee. For melee diamonds used as accent stones in halos and pavé, VS to SI clarity is entirely sufficient. The accent stones support the centre stone and are never individually scrutinised. The wholesale melee buying guide covers melee specification in full.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is the best clarity grade for lab-grown diamonds at retail?
For most European retail, VS2 is the best all-round clarity grade. It is eye-clean across nearly all shapes while keeping wholesale cost meaningfully below VS1. For brilliant cuts such as round, oval, and cushion, SI1 offers an even stronger value position while remaining eye-clean. For step cuts such as emerald and asscher, VS1 is the safer choice because the open faceting reveals inclusions more readily.

Q2. What does eye-clean mean for a lab-grown diamond?
Eye-clean means a diamond has no inclusions visible to the naked eye at normal viewing distance. A customer cannot distinguish an eye-clean SI1 from a VVS2 without magnification, but the wholesale price difference is significant. Buying the lowest clarity grade that is reliably eye-clean for a given shape is the core principle of profitable clarity selection.

Q3. Is SI1 clarity good enough to sell?
Yes, in brilliant cuts. Round brilliants and brilliant fancy shapes such as oval, cushion, and radiant hide inclusions well, making SI1 reliably eye-clean and an excellent value grade. SI1 should be reviewed individually in step cuts such as emerald and asscher, where inclusions are more visible.

Q4. Why does clarity matter more in emerald cut diamonds?
Emerald cuts use long, open, parallel facets that act like windows into the stone, making any inclusion far more visible than in a brilliant cut of the same grade. For this reason, VS2 is the practical minimum for emerald and other step cuts, with VS1 the safer choice for retail display stock.

Q5. Do lab-grown diamonds have better clarity than natural diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds frequently achieve higher clarity grades than mined equivalents because the controlled growth process produces fewer random inclusions. This allows retailers to access strong commercial clarity grades at accessible wholesale prices. Clarity is still graded by IGI on the identical FL to I2 scale used for natural diamonds.
